Basis State

If a Set of states are BOTH

• linearly independent
• span the whole space (i.e., every state in the space can be written as a linear combination of these things)

then they are called basis states.

Note that $\left\lvert + \right\rangle,\left\lvert - \right\rangle$ are “basis” states
